Understanding sodium-filled exhaust valves and why they matter for your build

What Are Sodium-Filled Valves?
  • Hollow-stem exhaust valves partially filled with metallic sodium
  • Sodium melts at 208°F, becoming liquid coolant inside the stem
  • Liquid sodium sloshing with engine vibration transfers heat from the hot valve head up through the stem and into the valve guide
  • Reduces exhaust valve temperatures by 200–300°F
  • Critical for valve longevity on high-heat applications
  • Standard on OEM factory turbo and high-output engines for decades

Sodium-Filled Exhaust Valves Recommended
At your boost level, exhaust valve temperatures will exceed 1,400°F during sustained WOT. Solid-stem valves under these conditions accelerate seat recession and can cause catastrophic valve failure. Sodium-filled exhaust valves are strongly recommended for any boosted application.
