Choosing the wrong carburetor is one of the most common ways builders leave power on the table — or worse, create a drivability nightmare. CFM sizing is the first decision, not the last: a 750 CFM double-pumper on a mildly cammed 350 won't make it fast, it'll make it boggy and unresponsive at part throttle. The rule of thumb is displacement (in cubic inches) × peak RPM ÷ 3456, then size up 10-15% for conservative overhead. Holley's double-pumper line dominates race and high-performance street applications — its accelerator pump circuit responds harder than any vacuum secondary carb on the market. Edelbrock's Thunder Series is the better choice for street builds that need consistent cold starts and smooth progression from idle to cruise. Choke type matters too: electric choke is the correct choice for any build that starts cold more than twice a year. Cam duration also plays into this — a big-duration solid cam drops idle vacuum, which changes how vacuum-secondary carburetors behave.
